Flagstaff to GC Schedule 1

First Car to the Grand Canyon – Lippincott Toledo – Original Drive 1/6/1902

Commemorative Drive – Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon – Howell Brothers

Schedule for the Howell Brother’s re-creation of the 1902 Toledo Steam Car run from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon. The Toledo Steam Car, driven by Lippincott, was the first car to be driven from Flagstaff to the Grand Canyon. The Howell Brothers found this car and purchased it at auction. They then decided that they would try to drive (almost) the same route driven 112 years ago with the very same car that made the original trip!

This re-creation will take place this coming Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. The public is invited to see this historic car and visit with the Howells during their adventure. The schedule attached details the approximate times and places that you can meet up with the Howells.

Please note the schedule displays approximate times. Actual times will be subject to the realities of the adventure including weather, road conditions, the car itself, etc.

If you have any questions please call Brian Blue @ 928.600.0595 or Tom Martin @ 928.856.9065

Approximate Itinerary

August 25-27, 2014

Everyone is very appreciative of all the interest that has been expressed regarding this historic ride.  It will be very exciting.  A huge thank you goes out to the Howell Brothers who initiated this idea.  And a huge thank you to the many people that have jumped in to help organize this event.

The Howells have expressed a desire to have the opportunity to re-create this historic trip with a high degree of authenticity.  To this end we are trying to let them “have the adventure” while still giving them some support.  For example we have mapped out the route for the Howells but we are not going to have signs or cars parked at junctions to point the way.  In fact, in front of them we hope they only see the landscape and can feel the adventure of doing this “alone”.

That said, a 1906 Darracq Roadster will follow the Toledo. We will also have two or three trailing chase cars to offer support but on the first day we are asking that the public not “join” and drive the route with them.  The public is invited to view the cars and visit with the Howells on Monday afternoon, Tuesday morning at the start of the adventure and Tuesday midday at the lunch stop.  You can find details of these opportunities in the attached schedule.

On Wednesday the route takes into the far backcountry up to the Grand Canyon.  There are no access roads to intersect the trip.  With this in mind the public is invited to caravan with the trailing chase cars well behind the Howells.  However please understand that you will have to follow well behind the historic cars and that they will be only going 10mph or less.  It will be extremely slow going.  Those that wish to join must car pool

A meeting location toward the end of the second day will be at the Grandview Tower.  We will be stopping there for a cup of tea and to plan the final run into Grandview Point and the Grand Canyon.  See the schedule for details.

Disclaimer

The following schedule is a gross approximation.  The actual trip will be subject to the realities of the day that include road conditions, weather, the automobile itself and all other unknowns.  For any updates you can text or phone the numbers listed below.

This is an excellent place for the public to meet up with the adventure and not have to go the extremely slow stage coach road.  To access this point one would drive to the Grand Canyon, take 64 East towards Cameron about 11 miles and turn right on the dirt road that is FR 310 at the sign directing you to Grandview Tower (NOT Grandview Lookout/Point)
